Joshua Tree National Park
Few areas more vividly illustrate the contrast between the high and low deserts than Joshua Tree National Park, America´s newest national park.
Below 3,000 feet, the Colorado Desert, occupying the eastern half of the park, is dominated by the abundant creosote bush, plus small
stands of spidery ocotillo and jumping cholla cactus.
The higher Mojave Desert is the special habitat of the undisciplined looking Joshua Tree. Standing like islands in a desolate sea, the
oases provide dramatic contrast to their arid surroundings. The park also encompasses some of the most interesting geologic displays found
in California. Exposed granite monoliths and rugged mountains of twisted rock testify to the power of the earth forces that shaped the land.
The eastern entrance of the park is just 25 minutes east of Indio.
Eco-Tours
The Royal Plaza Inn is surrounded by some of the most fascinating landscape in America. Jeeps leave the hotel on four hour tours, (including
a one-hour hike), through fertile agricultural fields to the infamous San Andreas Fault.
The tour will take you through the Painted Hills, a maze of steep-walled canyons and ravines, brilliantly-colored pinnacles and fantastic
rock formations. The tour then crosses the San Andreas Fault where you will see how the awesome force of nature is creating mountains
and changing the landscape. The tour also features a visit to where Star Trek, the motion picture was filmed and an incredible "Hike of Death".
